The 2017 Helpmann Award winners were recently announced. The annual awards recognise distinguished artistic achievement and excellence in the many disciplines of Australia's vibrant live performance sectors, including musical theatre, contemporary music, comedy, cabaret, regional touring, presentations for children, opera, classical music, theatre, dance and physical theatre.
North Queensland based and nationally renowned dance company Dancenorth has taken out their first Helpmann winning Best Production and Choreography for their immersive dance and music production, Attractor.
Attractor, a collaboration between Dancenorth, Indonesia’s tour-de-force music duo Senyawa and Melbourne’s choreographic luminaries Lucy Guerin and Gideon Obarzanek, opened to rave reviews when it premiered at Asia TOPA in Melbourne in February.
The production was also presented at WOMADelaide 2017, and will be featured at Brisbane Festival in September and tour to the US in October this year.
Other Helpmann winners included Hot Brown Honey, who won Best Cabaret Performer, and Ballet Preljocaj’s Snow White, who took out Best Ballet.
