Sue Gillingham

In 2017, Sue celebrates 25 years of teaching American Smooth and Rhythm, amongst many other styles of partner and ballroom dancing. She continues to perform professionally and to choreograph for couples and groups, both for artistic performance and for competition. Aside from her consistent creative work in the partnered styles she teaches, Sue has also choreographed for musical theatre, bands, solo performance, film, and ensemble performances.

She and partner Dane Berry are three-times winners of the ASDAC Outback Crown Professional 6-Dance Championship, Australia’s only competitive event for American Style ballroom. Sue and Dane were Australia’s first certified independent examiners of American Style dance, and are Australia’s only examiners for the Dance Vision International syllabus. They are the directors of River City Ballroom in Brisbane’s West End, which they founded in 2012 to provide high quality personal tuition and coaching for adult learners. Since 2014, River City Ballroom has raised over $13,000 to help local organisation Micah Projects to reduce homelessness in Brisbane.

Sue’s academic training is in mathematics, engineering, and mathematical programming. In 2003, as a recipient of both a Clarendon Fund Scholarship and the Hector Pilling Scholarship, she was awarded a Masters in Mathematics from the University of Oxford. She was also awarded a sporting Half Blue as a member of Oxford’s premiership-winning competitive dance team. She lectured in mathematics at QUT for 8 years. Sue has recently been registered as a Commonwealth Marriage Celebrant.
