Flow: Dance on Screen Series - Australian Dance Theatre

FLOW is a film series presented by ADT’s International Centre for Choreography (ICC), in partnership with the Mercury Cinema. In 2021, FLOW features two programs that will be screened in early August at Adelaide’s Mercury Cinema: Program 1 features Australian films, curated from an open call, while Program 2 features a selection of international films screened at the 2021 edition of the renowned Cinedans Festival in Amsterdam.

OPEN CALL FOR AUSTRALIAN FILM SUBMISSIONS

Program 1, the Australian Films program, will be curated by ADT’s Artistic Director and award-winning filmmaker, Garry Stewart, and Margie Medlin, ICC producer and distinguished artist in the field of dance on screen. The focus of the program is short dance films up to 15 minutes duration from Australian filmmakers, made between January 2019 and July 2021. There is no particular theme required; selection criteria will instead focus on what is emerging, what is crucial and what is possible within the medium of cinematic dance. Submissions can be from various genres of dance film: experimental, documentary, animation and/or music videos.

MadeBy - Choreographic Competition

MadeBy is a world-first initiative developed by RAD Australia with music licensing body OneMusic Australia.

The Competitions

Launched on 23 February 2021, MadeBy will first take the form of staggered competitions. Initially, through their membership with OneMusic (APRA AMCOS), Australian composers were offered the opportunity to submit an original composition into a competition that was judged by a panel of leading industry peers.  This stage is now complete! The winning piece Regrowth by NSW Blue Mountains composer Emma Greenhill will now be featured from 17 May 2021 in a second competition for aspiring choreographers from within the RAD membership, who will be asked to create an original dance work in response to the music. Again these entries will be judged by an expert panel of judges.

The Collaboration

Along with cash prizes, each winner will then be given support to collaborate on a new work together. In a bid to nurture the careers of emerging artists and educate musicians and dancers on the creative process, OneMusic and the RAD have engaged professional artists in both fields who will mentor the winning artists throughout their collaboration. The winning composer and winning choreographer will have 12 months from 31 August 2021 until 31 August 2022 to work together on a brand new music and dance work that will premiere late in 2022.

Entries for the Choreographic Competition open on Monday 17 May 2021 at 9am and close on Tuesday 27 July 2021 at 5pm.
